Following a successful flank attack at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet was riding forward along the Plank Road when a volley of fire emerged from the woods to his right. Longstreet felt the sudden pain of a bullet passing through his neck and shoulder as he became yet another victim of friendly fire. Although Gen. Longstreet was not perfect, he should be remembered as one of the best generals that fought in the civil war. In my mind any general that survived as many battles as he had to be both skilled and lucky. He was courageous and vain, he was skilled and lucky, and he was a great leader and a sometimes flawed follower. Longstreet was not the sole agent of all modern change away from the Napoleonic method, but his contributions were very significant, executed on a large scale, and demonstrated that he was a modern thinker unparalleled in the Confederate Army.
